GRE

(Graduate Record Examination)

What is GRE

The Graduate Record Examination, or GRE, holds significant importance in the application process for graduate or business schools. It is a standardized, computer-based test featuring multiple-choice questions. Often required for admission to graduate programs globally, including MBA programs, the GRE score is also accepted by many law schools in the United States.

Administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS), the GRE aims to provide admissions committees with a standardized measure to evaluate applicants’ readiness for graduate-level academic work. Alongside your academic record and supporting materials, your GRE score plays a crucial role in demonstrating your preparedness for the challenges of graduate academic study.

A high GRE score can significantly enhance your graduate, business, or law school application, showcasing your proficiency in basic arithmetic, algebra, geometry, data analysis, and college-level vocabulary. Moreover, it assesses your critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills, which are vital for success in higher education and beyond.

Reasons for Taking GRE

Taking the GRE offers numerous benefits and opportunities for individuals aiming for higher education and academic advancement:

Global Acceptance

With over 7 lakh people taking the test annually and accepted in more than 90 countries, the GRE is recognized globally by numerous universities and institutions.

Validity

GRE scores remain valid for five years, providing flexibility for individuals to apply for graduate programs at their preferred time.

Assessment of Skills

The GRE evaluates critical skills essential for graduate-level study, including analytical reasoning, verbal reasoning, and quantitative reasoning.

Mandatory for Admission

Many universities, especially for business degree programs, require GRE scores as part of the admission process. A strong GRE score can strengthen your application and improve your chances of acceptance.

Gateway to Top Universities

Top-ranked universities often have stringent admission criteria, and a good GRE score is essential to stand out among applicants and secure admission to prestigious programs.

GRE Exam Eligibility

The GRE Exam imposes no specific eligibility criteria on candidates. It is open for registration to individuals of all backgrounds, with no set age limits or educational qualifications mandated for GRE 2024. Conducted by ETS, the GRE General Test, commonly referred to as GRE, is one of the largest assessment programs for admission to graduate courses in MS & MBA studies worldwide. Students planning to pursue admission to graduate programs abroad are required to undertake the GRE test.

GRE Syllabus

The GRE Verbal Syllabus is divided into three parts:

Sentence Equivalence

In this part, candidates must complete a sentence with two options that have the same meaning and are grammatically correct. It evaluates your ability to fill in the blanks in a paragraph with suitable choices.

Text Completion

This section tests your capacity to construct a coherent picture from the given text. Both Sentence Equivalence and Text Completion gauge your vocabulary skills, but merely recognizing words won’t suffice. Understanding their meanings is crucial for success in this section.

Reading Comprehension

This section includes passages from three different subject areas – humanities, natural science, and social science (Business). Candidates need to read and analyze these passages carefully before answering questions. Don’t worry if you come across an unfamiliar topic; focus on understanding the passage and answering the questions based on the information provided. Remember, all questions can be answered using the passage content. This section assesses your ability to comprehend written information effectively.

GRE Exam Pattern

As per the recent announcement by ETS, the GRE exam for 2024 will consist of five sections. These sections will evaluate the candidates’ skills in Analytical Writing, Verbal Reasoning, and Quantitative Reasoning. Below, we outline the updated GRE test pattern.

Given that the GRE General Test is utilized across a broad spectrum of graduate school programs, including some business schools, the significance of your GRE score will vary depending on the field and the individual institution. It’s essential to research the universities to which you plan to apply, allowing you to tailor your GRE preparation strategy accordingly.
