IELTS Score

IELTS Score and Band

IELTS scores range from 0 to 9, with increments of 0.5, such as 7.5 or 8.5. Each section—listening, writing, reading, and speaking—is assigned a band score from 0 to 9. The overall band score is calculated as the average of these four scores.

Total Band Score Calculation

The overall band score is determined by averaging the scores of all four sections. For instance, if a candidate scores:

  • 7 in Listening
  • 7.5 in Reading
  • 8 in Writing
  • 7.5 in Speaking

their overall band score would be 7.5 bands.

Rounding Up

If the score ends in .25, it is rounded up to the nearest 0.5. For example, a score of 7.25 is rounded up to 7.5.

Rounding Whole Band

If the score ends in .75, it is rounded up to the next whole band. For instance, a score of 7.75 is rounded up to 8.

Rounding Down

Scores below .25 or .75 are rounded down. For instance, a score of 7.21 would be rounded down to 7 bands.

IELTS Score Chart

When preparing for migration or university admission, achieving a desirable IELTS score is crucial. Typically, a score above 7 bands is considered ideal, indicating proficiency. Scoring higher than 7 bands increases your chances of being accepted by international universities.
