TOEFL Syllabus
The TOEFL exam is structured to assess various language skills essential for academic success in an English-speaking environment. The syllabus encompasses four main sections: Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing.
Listening Test Syllabus
This section consists of three lectures, each lasting between 3 to 5 minutes. Six questions are asked per lecture, with a total of 18 questions for the lectures. Additionally, there are two conversations, each followed by 5 questions, resulting in 10 questions for this part. Test takers are advised to take notes during the listening session to answer questions efficiently. The total duration of the listening test is 36 minutes.
Speaking Test Syllabus
This section assesses speaking skills, focusing on language usage, delivery, and topic presentation. Test takers are required to respond to one independent topic with a preparation time of 15 to 30 seconds and a response time of 45 to 60 seconds. Additionally, there are three integrated tasks involving reading, listening, and speaking, each with a preparation time of 15 to 30 seconds and a response time of 45 to 60 seconds.
Writing Test Syllabus
In this section, test takers are tasked with writing two paragraphs effectively, demonstrating language proficiency and clarity. The first task involves an integrated task of reading, listening, and writing, with a total duration of 20 minutes (reading: 3 min; listening: 2 min; writing: 15 min). The second task requires writing for an academic discussion and takes 10 minutes to complete.
Reading Test Syllabus
This section comprises two passages, each approximately 700 words long. Test takers have 35 minutes to read each passage. There are a total of 20 questions, with 10 questions based on each passage. Marks are awarded for correctly answered questions.

TOEFL Score
The TOEFL scores range from 0 to 120, providing a comprehensive assessment of English proficiency.
- Above 90: Excellent
- 82: Average
- 100 – 110: Good
- 83 – 90: Above average
- 0 – 81: Below average
Most universities consider a score above 90 or higher indicative of a high level of English proficiency. For admission to many international universities, a score of 90 – 100 points on the iBT or 580 or 600 on the PBT is often required.
TOEFL Validity
Your TOEFL score remains valid for 2 years from the date you took the exam. There is no upper age limit for attempting the TOEFL. You can take the exam as many times as needed, with a minimum gap of 12 days between each attempt.
